Two Rockingham County 4-H youth attended NC 4-H Congress in Raleigh at NC State University on July 21-24, 2018. More than 500 young people from across NC and their adult leaders attended the conference. Congress is a four-day conference focused on leadership and community service for our youth. 4-Hers heard from a variety of speakers and were engaged in many leadership workshops. During the week, youth also elect their new state 4-H officers. The youth also had a lot of social, fun time with their new friends from other counties across NC.

On the first day of Congress, we had six 4-Hers present at the state 4-H presentations contests. Patrick Winchester, Keynon Settle, Makenzi Willis, Addison Farris, Laura Sheets and Caroline Ray. For all of these 4-Hers it was their first time presenting at the state level and they did a great job. Makenzi Willis ended up being awarded 1st place for her pubic speech. Addison Farris received 2nd place for her fire safety presentation. Caroline Ray was awarded with 3rd place for her dog agility presentation. Laura Sheets was awarded with silver for her horse public speech and will move onto the Southern Regionals 4-H Contest. We are so proud of our 4-Hers for making it all the way to the state level and presenting!

During Congress, we had two 4-Hers who were awarded with college scholarships and more. Bailee Perkins was awarded with the North Central District 4-H Horse Program scholarship. Emily Holmes was awarded with the Carolyn Smith Ivey 4-H scholarship. Emily was also awarded with the Dr Eloise Cofer Familiy and Consumer Science Trophy. This was a huge accomplishment and speaks to her very active 4-H career.

During NC 4-H Congress our youth attended workshops on leadership and other topics that they can come and teach their club members. The last day our youth participated in a huge Hands to Service community service project, youth prepared packaged meals to feed hungry kids all across the world. Within just a few short hours, 4-Hers had prepared 50,175 meals!

The 4-Hers attending Congress were Keynon Settle and Sarah Farlee. Our Rockingham County 4-H youth represented the county proudly and had a wonderful time. Thank you to United Way for helping provide 4-H scholarship dollars to these youth for this special trip!
