Three Rockingham County 4-H youth attended N.C. 4-H Congress in Raleigh at NC State University on July 20-23, 2019. More than 500 young people from across NC and their adult leaders attended the conference. Congress is a four-day conference focused on leadership and community service for our youth. 4-H’ers heard from a variety of speakers and were engaged in many leadership workshops. During the week, youth also elect their new state 4-H officers. The youth also had a lot of social, fun time with their new friends from other counties across NC.

On the first day of Congress, we had nine 4-H’ers present at the state 4-H presentations contests. Sarah Sheets, Laura Sheets, Caroline Ray, Alice Holmes, Keynon Settle, Leah Lovelace, McKayla Doom, Sarah Farlee, and Katelyn Hewitt. For five of them, it was their first time presenting at the state level and they did a great job. Sarah Sheets placed 3rd and Laura Sheets placed 2nd in Horse Public Speaking. Laura will be representing NC at AQHA Congress and at Eastern Nationals. Caroline Ray won 1st in Small and Companion Animals. Alice Holmes won 2nd in Foods and Nutrition. McKayla Doom won 1st in Public Speaking. Katelyn Hewitt won 2nd in Arts and Communication. We are so proud of our 4-H’ers for making it all the way to the state level and presenting!

During Congress, we had one 4-H’er who was awarded with a college scholarship. Laura Sheets was awarded with the North Central District 4-H Horse Program scholarship.

During N.C. 4-H Congress our youth attended workshops on leadership and other topics that they can come and teach their club members. The last day our youth participated in a huge Hands to Service community service project, youth packaged meals to feed hungry kids all across the world. Within just a few short hours, 4-H’ers had prepared thousands of meals!

The 4-H’ers attending Congress were Alice Holmes, Keynon Settle and Sarah Farlee. Our Rockingham County 4-H youth represented the county proudly and had a wonderful time. Thank you to United Way for helping provide 4-H scholarship dollars to these youth for this special trip!Image of Congress grmoup
