Farmers selling produce by weight will need to have scales checked for 2018!
Farmer Scale Accuracy Testing
Rockingham County Agricultural Center 525 NC 65
Reidsville, NC 27320
Thursday February 22, 2018 9 am – 12 pm
Increased awareness of the benefits of locally grown food products is bringing more customers to roadside farm stands and farmers markets. All produce sold in North Carolina by the weight needs to be weighed on a scale that has been tested for accuracy. In Rockingham County, Cooperative Extension collaborates with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture Weights and Measures Inspector to provide scale accuracy testing for Commercial Fruit and Vegetable producers in the spring. In the past, 80% of the scales tested in North Carolina read on the minus, causing the farmers an unseen loss of profit.
The certification stickers on the scales also give customers the assurance they are getting full value of the money they spend for food.
Contact Kathryn Holmes, Rockingham County Cooperative Extension Agent at Kathryn_holmes@ncsu.edu or 336-342-8230 for more information or questions.
Please don’t forget to get your scales their annual checkup!
