Food Safety Education Month

The truth is food borne illnesses may occur more often than you think. Approximately 48 million Americans will get sick from a food borne illness each year. Over 9 million Americans experience a food borne illness resulting from 1 of the 31 pathogens that we know of, with about 56,000 of those illnesses resulting in hospitalization, and over a 1,000 deaths. About 39 million Americans get sick from unknown pathogens, with about 72,000 needing hospitalization, and about 1,700 deaths. In other words, the CDC estimates that about 1 in 6 people in the United States will get sick, 128,000 will be hospitalized, and 3,000 will die per year from food borne illnesses.

September is National Food Safety Education Month, and N.C. Cooperative Extension aims to help to reduce the risk of food borne illness through educational resources and events!
